arrangements are made, such as excursions or sports coaching, beyond regular
school hours, supervision is arranged. Parents are strongly recommended to ensure
that their children arrive at school after 8.35am each day when rostered teacher

SCHOOL CANTEEN
The school has a fully equipped canteen providing a wide range of excellent
lunch choices and recess snacks at reasonable prices. The canteen is staffed
by a permanent supervisor and voluntary helpers. Additional people are always
needed and you are invited to join the roster - weekly, fortnightly, or monthly.
If you can assist on a regular or relief basis, please contact the canteen.
Any profits made by the canteen are used to better the education of all the
children in the school. Price lists are available at the school office or at
the canteen. Lunch orders are taken every morning from 8.35am to 8.55am. A class
monitor collects the lunches from the canteen at lunchtime.
HISTORY
Governor Macquarie named this area Bradbury Park after William Bradbury, an
early local inn-keeper. He had previously named the township in honour of his
wife's maiden name, Campbell Town. Our girls' uniform is based on the Campbell
tartan and our school motto "We Lead Others Follow" is a derivation
of the Clan motto. Our school badge features a "Scottish War Galley"
which appears on the upper right and lower left quadrants of the Duke of Argyll's
shield. The Duke is chief of the Clan Campbell. When this suburb was established
in the 1960's, it was initially called Sherwood Hills. The school opened in
1968.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Attendance at school is compulsory. For all absences, a letter addressed to
the class teacher, indicating the period of absence and the reason is required.
If your child is likely to be absent for more than three days, please advise
the school as to the extent of, and the reason for, the prolonged absence, preferably
in writing. Class rolls and pupils' attendance are monitored by Home School
Liaison Officers who will visit the parents of children whose attendance is
unsatisfactory. Even when absence is notified by telephone it must be followed
by a written note to the class teacher
COMPUTERS AND CALCULATORS
These examples of modern technology are also part of our school program. The
school has a computer network in the library and in Room 12 for research and
computers in each room. Calculators, in whole class sets, are utilised by teachers
in Mathematics activities so that our children become familiar with them and
learn how to use them appropriately.
SICKNESS, ACCIDENT PROCEDURES
If a child is taken ill at school or suffers an injury which is considered serious,
then the school will make every effort to contact you or, alternatively, one
of the persons you have listed on the Pupil Information Card as a suitable contact.
If emergency contact details change please contact our office as a matter of
urgency to have these changed. You will appreciate that if your child is ill
before school, it would be wise to keep him/her home or arrange for suitable
care elsewhere. If, in the case of an accident, contact with you or your nominees
is unsuccessful, then the school will arrange medical treatment, should it be
felt necessary. Your approval to do this is contained on the Pupil Information
Card.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Some common diseases require the child to be away from school for a certain
period. The following table gives details.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
Occasionally a child may need to take medication at school. A very small number
of children may need to take medication at school regularly or for emergencies.
The following arrangements apply:-
(a) Occasional Medication: Medicine is often prescribed to be taken three times
daily. This can usually be done at breakfast time, just after school and at
bed time. However, if your child needs to take medication at school it must
be given to the School Assistant at the office with a note naming the medication,
dosage and illness for which it was prescribed. The medication must also be
labelled with your child's name, class, type of medication, dosage and time
to be administered.
(b) Regular Medication: If your child needs regular medication at school you
MUST apply to the Principal in writing. Details of the Department of Education
and Training's Policy will then be discussed with you. The form can be picked
up from the office. A health plan will be developed to record the agreed medication
procedures.
(c) Emergency Medication: Where your child may require emergency medication
because of severe allergies or other medical conditions a health plan will be
developed with your assistance and regular medication procedures followed.
UNIFORM
It has been determined by the school community that the wearing of the school
uniform is compulsory. The uniform is attractive, practical and is available
at moderate cost. Wearing the uniform has definite advantages for pupils, parents
and the school as a whole. It gives the child a sense of belonging, of identity
and it reduces pressure on parents to supply other, expensive clothes. It looks
very attractive and causes favourable comment wherever our children go. All
children are encouraged to wear FULL uniform daily. Parents are urged to INSIST
on this. Even small variations (different socks, different shoes, different
sloppy-joes, etc) spoil the effect. The uniform is detailed below.
*PLEASE LABEL ALL CLOTHING CLEARLY*

CLOTHING POOL
A clothing pool organized by the P & C Association operates in the school
hall on Wednesday mornings from 8.30am to 9.30am. The clothing pool sells new
girls’ uniforms (summer and winter), tartan skorts, mint green polo shirts
(for both boys and girls), red sport shirts (with school crest), sport skorts
for girls, fleecy zip jackets and sloppy joes (with school crest), hats, caps
and school bags. They also sell second-hand uniforms at a very low cost. Parents
with items that are no longer useful to their children may donate them to the
clothing pool. An itemized price list is available from the front office. Unfortunately,
we are unable to stock boys’ grey shorts, trousers, socks, shoes and tracksuits.
These items can be found at most large department stores. Other uniform suppliers
are the uniform shop in Dumaresq Street and Lowes in Macarthur Square.
PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR SCHOOL
Preparing a child for Kindergarten is an important task. A special booklet called
: "Starting School - A New Experience" has been written and is available
from the school.
PUPIL ENROLMENTS
Children must be formally enrolled before they begin to attend school. To enrol
in Kindergarten, a child must turn 5 before 1 August in that year but provision
is made for early entry to Kindergarten for gifted and talented children. All
such children may begin school at the beginning of the school year, they no
longer have to wait until they reach 4 years 9 months as was the case in previous
years. Proof of age is required by the Department of Education & Training
for a child's first enrolment. For this purpose we need to sight a birth certificate
or a passport.
TRANSFERS
When children are transferring to another school, the school office personnel
should be informed of the details of the move so that school records can be
adjusted and a transfer form can be provided for submission at the new school.
Your co-operation in returning any school equipment, e.g. library books etc.
would be appreciated.
SPECIAL PLACEMENTS
Twins: Sometimes over-dependence by one twin on the other prevents the child
realising his/her potential when in the same class. In other cases twins work
extremely well together, bringing out the best in each other. Because there
could be changes in attitudes sometimes through the children's primary schooling
it is, therefore, recommended that some consultation between home and school
take place when it is deemed necessary.
CUSTODY ARRANGEMENTS
The Principal should be fully informed of any legal custody matters relating
to your child. This would include the sighting of court decisions, details of
impending actions and a personal outline of any concerns that may affect your
child/children. While details will be noted for the protection of your child/children's
best interest/rights, your confidentiality will be respected.
SCHOOL COUNSELLOR
A School Counsellor is attached to this school to assist the teaching staff
in assessing a child's specific needs and/or in compiling a special education/behaviour
modification program for him/her. The Counsellor is an experienced teacher with
specialist training in psychology and child development.
SCHOOL COMMUNICATION TO PARENTS
To keep parents informed of various school events, topics of educational thinking/interest
and general community notices, a school bulletin is sent home fortnightly. This
distribution day is usually the Monday of the even weeks of each term. Parents
are asked to note dates and times that are listed in "At A Glance".
PUPIL PROGRESS REPORTING
Parents receive written reports on their children's progress throughout the
year. Parents seeking progress information at other times should contact the
class teacher or the Deputy Principal of the appropriate department to arrange
a mutually convenient time for the interview.
INTERVIEWS WITH STAFF
Apart from the written progress reports mentioned above, parents may sometimes
wish to have a formal interview with the child's teacher, one of the Deputy
Principals or the Principal regarding other matters about their child. Parents
are asked to phone or send a note to arrange a suitable appointment time. This
is far better than simply arriving at school in the hope that the staff member
is available. The majority of matters are mostly able to be dealt with by the
classroom teacher in the first instance.
BUS SERVICES
The school is serviced by a number of buses. A regular route runs along Jacaranda
Avenue.*Bus 6 travels via Jacaranda, Campbellfield, Lawn, The Parkway, Appin
Road, Therry Road, thence to Ambarvale. It departs at 3.05pm.*Bus 5 travels
via Jacaranda, Campbellfield, St Johns, Hoddle, Lindsay, Dumaresq, Campbelltown
Station, Glen Alpine. It departs at 3.05pm.*Bus 1 travels via Jacaranda, St
Johns, The Parkway, Akuna Avenue. It departs at 3.10pm.Details of regular buses
and special services may be obtained from Busways on 46 258922.Numerous child
minding services pick up children from the Jacaranda Avenue entrance.
BICYCLES
Parents who know their children have developed safe riding habits may choose
to allow their children to ride to school. While special racks are provided,
no responsibility can be taken for loss or damage. A suitable locking device
is essential. Bicycles must be walked through the school grounds. Bike riders
need to be regularly reminded that a bike helmet must be worn and that all rules
of the road should always be observed. Road safety experts recommend that children
under 10 years of age should be supervised when they ride on our roads. The
school has bicycle riding awareness as part of our school curriculum program.
MONEY COLLECTION
It is requested that any money for school activities/materials, be sent in a
sealed envelope marked with the child's name, his/her class and its purpose.
It should be handed to the class teacher at the beginning of the day.
LOST PROPERTY
Parents are strongly urged to label all articles of clothing, especially jumpers,
cardigans, hats and rainwear, permanently and clearly. School bags, lunch boxes
and drink containers should also be clearly labeled. Three lost property centres
for Infants, Junior Primary and Senior Primary are located around the school.
PUPIL CLASS REQUIREMENTS
At the commencement of each year your child's class teacher will notify you
of the student requirements that each child should have at school each day.
Items such as pens, pencils, ruler, glue, eraser and scissors (Primary) are
the normal requirements. It is expected that all exercise books etc. provided
for each pupil by the school will be covered and neatly labeled as quickly as
possible after distribution. In some classes covering may be done as a class
activity.
WORK BOOKS
Primary and Infants classes may use selected text books to provide students
with a source of explanations/graded exercises/information to reinforce daily
class activities. As a means of reducing costs for parents, the school organises
a bulk-buy scheme. Parents are given a text book list by individual teachers
giving cost details at the beginning of Term 1. Parents are requested to finalise
all text book payments as quickly as possible please.
HOMEWORK
Homework is given by class teachers as a regular means of extending concepts,
understandings and knowledge gained in the classroom. This may range from spelling
word revision, practising mathematical facts or other tasks involving measuring,
recording, writing, drawing, estimating and discovering etc. It may involve
finding information or items. Each teacher will explain to parents, at the beginning
of Term 1 each year, his/her expectations regarding homework and if your child
is to gain maximum benefit, then your role, as parents, in supervision and encouragement,
is essential to success. Please refer concerns promptly to class teachers by
note, telephone or interview request.
BEHAVIOUR, RULES AND WELFARE
The school has a policy aimed at promoting high standards of behaviour through
self-discipline. Children who achieve such standards will find that their relationships
with staff members and other pupils are generally happy. Consequently their
self-esteem will be raised. When children do not reach acceptable standards
of behaviour or manners steps are taken to encourage them to modify their actions.
Positive steps are used primarily. Sanctions are used, if necessary. If acceptable
levels are not achieved and maintained, parents are notified and are asked to
become involved.A set of rules, emphasising the positive, has been drawn up.
It is printed below for parents' and pupils' benefits.Good manners are fostered,
use of simple good manners language, such as "please", thank you",
excuse me", "may I", and so on, are taught and insisted upon.
If a child's psychological, physical, moral or educational welfare is in doubt,
intervention occurs, according to need. Parent involvement is usually needed.
Assistance is often sought from the School Counsellor. A booklet entitled "Bradbury
School Discipline Policy" - Staff, Parent and Student Handbook is made
available. It is strongly suggested that parents discuss the contents with their
children. Rewards as well as sanctions are outlined in this blue covered booklet.
SAFETY RULES
1. On arrival at school, children put their bags in hatrooms and go to the playground
area.
2. Before and after school, and in breaks, pupils may only be in a classroom
if they have the specific approval of a teacher.
3. Children must WALK when on CONCRETE or ASPHALT areas and all stairways
4. Where possible children must use pathways, not grassed areas.
5. If a child is INJURED in the playground, he/she should REPORT TO THE TEACHER
ON DUTY or, if seriously injured, have another child report.
6. Unless accompanied or directed by a teacher, children are not to go into
areas designated "Out of Bounds".
7. Children may ENTER CAR PARK ONLY IF ACCOMPANIED BY A TEACHER.
8. Children must WALK THEIR BICYCLES when in the school grounds.
9. Children must STAY IN THE SCHOOL GROUNDS unless given permission to leave
by an executive member of staff.
10. CHILDREN ARE TO BE COURTEOUS to each other, to staff and to visitors.
11. Children must only engage in activities which are not likely to cause harm,
damage or upset to other people or property.
12. Children are to obey any reasonable instruction given by any staff member.
13. Children are to sit while eating.
14. Children are to DEPOSIT ALL RUBBISH IN BINS.
WET WEATHER ARRANGEMENTS
In wet weather special arrangements are made for pupils outside class time.
They either stay indoors under supervision or, if it is appropriate, are supervised
out of rooms, but under shelter.
CAR PARKING
The safety of children is paramount. Therefore parents are asked to ALWAYS park
legally outside the school. Parking illegally, near the crossings or in the
bus stops, EVEN FOR A MINUTE can put children's lives in danger. This is especially
true in wet weather. Parents are not to use the school car park to deliver or
collect their children. The danger to other children is obvious, especially
if a number of parents do this. Pedestrian entry through the carpark is prohibited
at all times.
SPORTS ARRANGEMENTS
All grades, K-6 take part in a sports period once per week. The activities provided
are selected according to the age of the children. These activities aim to develop
strength, mobility, agility, flexibility, endurance, knowledge of minor and
major games and the inculcation of good sportsmanship.Years 3-6 take part in
three special sports days - a swimming carnival early in the year, a cross-country
running carnival and an athletic carnival in the latter part of the year.Years
K-2 also take part in an athletics carnival, with specially selected activities,
in the second half of the year. All children are required to wear sports uniform
on the appropriate day (which will be announced at the start of the school year).
For sports uniform details see page 4.Upon entry to Year 3 each child is allocated
to a sporting house. Each house is given a specific colour and on special sports
occasions involving inter-house competition, pupils are allowed to wear their
house colours. All children in one family are allocated to the same house.
| HOUSE COLOURS | Campbell - BLUE | Hovell - RED | Hume - YELLOW | Macquarie - GREEN |
EXCURSIONS
All classes from Kindergarten to Year 6 will, at some time during the year,
be involved in "away from school" educational activities (excursions).
These activities are planned by class teachers to coincide with work currently
being treated in the classroom and serve to reinforce in a direct way the many
useful outcomes of these class topics. Excursions may range from the short,
local, walking excursions to the "extended overnight accommodation"
type excursion for older students. At all times children are encouraged to fully
participate in these most valuable experiences and should any difficulties arise
in connection with your child's participation, you are urged to discuss the
matter with your child's teacher or the departmental head so that a solution
can be found. For any activity out of the school boundary, it is necessary,
by Department of Education and Training regulations, for parental or guardian
consent to be received. The details of all such activities are forwarded to
you prior to the date for your consideration.
SCRIPTURE - RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION
Catholic (Roman Catholic), Non-denominational Church of Christ (South-West Church),
Jehovah Witness and Moslem sessions are provided weekly. All Protestant groups
are combined and scripture lessons taken by visiting clergy/lay teachers in
alternate terms only.Children not taken for scripture under these arrangements
are grouped with school staff members who provide a scripture/civics/morals
program..Scripture time is usually 10.30am to 11.00am on Wednesdays.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
As well as their regular classroom program, many children are able to engage
in additional activities, some of which occur outside class time. These include
choirs, dance troupes, the concert band, representative sports team coaching,
visiting school library, school socials and leisure time activities such as
chess, Student Representative Council, debating, public speaking, multi-cultural
activities.
LIBRARY
The school has an excellent Library with a wide-ranging stock of books, games,
music, puzzles etc. Our teacher/librarian provides for all children to receive
lessons on the use of the library, appreciation of
literature and development of research skills using both printed materials and
the bank of 15 computers that is connected to the internet. All lessons are
organised co-operatively with the appropriate classroom teacher. Also, children
are encouraged to borrow books for recreational reading and for research. All
classes have a special borrowing period each week. Parents are involved in this
procedure. All pupils (from K to Year 4 inclusive) must have a library bag for
borrowing. It may be provided from home or bought at the library. Also, all
children have access to the library between 8.30am and 8.55am or at lunch times,
according to a roster.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
The S.R.C. is about developing leadership skills and its members are the elected
Captains and Prefects as well as other elected students. These S.R.C. members
visit all classrooms and discuss important school issues. The primary roles
of the S.R.C. are to represent all children at Bradbury and also to act as a
fund raising body for Stewart House and one other charity. Meetings are held
on a regular basis under the supervision of teachers who liaise with the council
and assist them in the co-ordination of council tasks.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
There are many opportunities for parents to be involved at the school. Involvement
has special benefits to those parents and their children. Parents gain a greater
insight into the complexities of education and a greater appreciation of their
school. Pupils gain in their attitude. Their parents' involvement indicates
to them that school is important and worthwhile. All parent helpers are required
to complete a child protection declaration and confidentiality undertaking.
* Parent Bodies - Parents & Citizens Association, School Council, Fundraising
Committees.
* In the classroom - by arrangement with the teacher - hearing reading, providing
individual assistance to pupils, coaching sports groups, teaching a particular
art or craft and so on.
* Visiting the school on special occasions - Education Week, Special Assemblies,
Presentation Day and so on.
* Parent Tutors for one-to-one reading help are trained by support teachers.
VOLUNTEERS AND VISITORS
Each day there are a number of volunteer helpers and visitors who enter the
school grounds. In order to ensure the safety of our students and the volunteers
and visitors, and to comply with Occupational, Health and Safety regulations,
the volunteers and visitors must report to the front office upon entry to the
school. At the front office they will sign in and be issued with either a Volunteer’s
or Visitor’s badge, at the completion of their volunteer duties or visit,
they are to return the badge to the front office and sign out. Please do not
be offended if you are approached by a staff member and requested to report
to the front office if you are not wearing a badge, they are only following
procedures set down to protect you and your children.Volunteers are also required
to complete a ‘Prohibited Employment Declaration’ and a ‘Confidentiality
Declaration’ form. These are available from the class teacher and need
to be returned to them prior to undertaking any voluntary duties. Once again
these procedures are in place to safeguard the children.
HANDWRITING
All pupils from Kindergarten to Year 6 are taught Foundation Style handwriting,
which is based on sloping strokes and oval shapes. Samples of Foundation Writing
including direction and where to start each letter is provided on the inside
of the back cover of the Parent Information Book. Students will develop through
4 stages:
STAGE 1 Development of slope and basic letter shapes as shown on the back of
this book.
STAGE 2 The use of "tails" to begin to join letters. This may occur
quite soon for students who readily master Stage 1.
STAGE 3 The use of all joins and the development of fluent cursive writing.
STAGE 4 The development of greater fluency, confidence and the beginning of
individual styles.
IMMUNISATION
In order to ensure that your children are completely protected against infectious
diseases, you should arrange for them to be immunised according to the schedule
outlined below. Immunisation can be carried out by your doctor, or free of charge,

CUSTODY OF PUPILS
Parents are expected to inform the school if the CUSTODY situation is at variance
to the norm. Schools have certain legal and moral obligations to fulfil in this
area.
Following is an outline of the school's obligations and procedures and the obligations
of parents. These have been included in the information provided so that custodial
parents have a complete understanding of the school policy.
Also contained is a form that the custodial parent is required to complete,
detach and return to the school if custody arrangements for the child/children
are a matter requiring special attention. It is imperative that this be done
on or prior to enrolment so that the full protection is offered to the child/children
and parent(s) concerned.

APPENDIX B
Information to parent(s) of pupils about appropriate school obligations/procedures
where custodial problems have been indicated.
1.0 SCHOOL OBLIGATIONS
1.1 The school implements all Department of School Education guidelines/policies
in reference to the custodial rights of parents and the pastoral care of all
people.
1.2 Members of the school staff act "in loco parentis" for all children
while they are at school and while they are in transit between home and school.
1.3 Staff members familiarise themselves with legal documents about children
with whom they have specific contact and/or about whom they may be approached
by family members of those children. Examples of appropriate legal documents
include court orders, pending court actions, solicitors' briefs etc.
1.4 In situations where no legal action/decision about custodial rights is taking/has
taken place, the school considers the enrolling parent as the person who has
legal custody.
1.5 Confidentiality and diplomacy are integral obligations observed by all staff
members when dealing with the personal relationship of parents and the specific
needs of children.
1.6 Any legal papers and/or requests which are served on the school or individual
staff members are referred to the legal branch of the Department of School Education
for either advice, decision or action.
2.0 SCHOOL PROCEDURES (Relevant segments only)
2.1 The principal will maintain a list of all children about whom custody decisions
are being/have been raised/made. A file of all legal documents and special requests
of the parents who have custody will also be maintained.
2.2 All staff members will report to the Principal any information indicating
that parents of any child enrolled at this school have separated/divorced and
that subsequent custody action(s) may be taking/has taken place. This information
will be presented to the senior executive by staff member(s) concerned as soon
as practicable.
2.3 All children about whom custody concerns have been raised, will have their
surname followed by a red dot in the class roll. This helps remind teachers
that special access requirements apply to that child, yet doesn't embarrass/identify
the child(ren) with/to his/her peers.
2.4 No child with a red dot classification can be released to any person unless
that person has the appropriate form completed and signed by a senior executive

for the non-custodial parent to receive a report too.

which outline a court decision and/or solicitor letters indicating future court
